Admissions and Professional Programs Webinar
See your name.
Hi everyone, my name is Rena Lectin Feldman assistant Dean of enrollment management here at Peabody College of Education and human development. I am joined tonight by Brian Smokler, who's our director of Education Technology. Here Peabody and we have a special guest here with us today. Tyler Lykins, who is a current student in our leadership and organization performance program. He's going to help me out tonight and
We are planning to to provide a high level overview about Peabody about the admissions process financial awards but really tonight is about you and the questions that you have which we will be happy to take after the presentation in the chat so as we go along be sure to jot down any questions. You have and we will be getting to those towards the back end of our presentation.
Uh.
OK.
I'm having trouble on my end Brian to advance the next slide can you help me out?
Under this ice way, and let their blank on my end so I appreciate that.
I think we're ready for the next slide.
It's fine.
I think on your computer you're logged in 2 times.
But should we see it up there.
Sorry folks will technical difficulty hang on one second.
There we go so yeah, this is not your grandmother's School of Education, which is just a cheeky way of saying we have a lot more than education teacher education here, although it is one of the things that we specialize in and we specialize specialize in very well. We offer many options as you'll see in a future slide. Everything from leadership to Polisy Psychology counseling and of course, Reading Education Secondary Elementary.
English language learners and much, much more P Patty has roots that goes back all the way to 1875 and in 1979. Vanderbilt University acquired Peabody so we've been around and have established our reputation along with Vanderbilt for quite a number of decades. Tyler you wanna tell him a little bit more about Nashville or Music City. Yeah, absolutely so I think in order to frame my experience in national helps to tell you a little bit where I came from and from Central Coast, California.
I was born and raised there I lived in the redwoods. The Redwood Forest in Santa Cruz mountains and I was like 5 minutes from the beach, so when people when I told people that I was leaving California to go to Nashville. They thought I was a little bit crazy, but I have to say that I could not be more happy national is a great place to be there's always so much going on and there's always something to do with a great place for young working professionals to kind of relocate to and just as mentioned on the slide. There's all kinds of different events from entertainment to sports to outdoors the one thing I will say is that?
I was shocked at how big of a hockey town. Nashville seems to be there is a die hard fan base here and it's great. There's also in the outdoor section well well. Natural is a large Metropolitan area. It takes about 15 minutes worth of driving to get outside of the city limits and then you start working your way into the outdoors and there's lots of hiking and park. San lots of River based activities and it's just a great place to be. I love it here.
Yeah, absolutely uhm and want to tell him a little bit more about the Peabody campus. Yeah, absolutely so currently Peabody campus is under renovation. We are working to renovate some of our older buildings in update them and I believe it raining in a bunch of smart classrooms and things of that nature. The Peabody Lawn, which is your iconic the iconic picture. Peabody is also currently being renovated, but do not fret or despair, it should be.
Done by the time you guys would be accepted to Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt campus is probably one of the most beautiful canvases that I've seen it. It's very UVS with the brick and pillar style buildings and it's gorgeous.
They were totally agree with that and right now, we have lots of acorns falling from those Oak trees and there are squirrels abound. Let me tell you a little bit more about Peabody by the numbers. We do offer 4 different degree types. We offered Masters of Education Masters of Public Policy Doctor of Education, which confers they ediane also PhD programs. And those all fall within our 5 different department's an we educate over 1100 students here.
In any given enrollment cycle and that's it this that. The professional and graduate level. We also have undergraduate students here as part of the undergraduate programs with Vanderbilt University. But at the graduate level and professional level, which is very impressive is that 95% of our students are employed within 3 months of graduation and what's even more impressive is we have a 98% percent knowledge rate, which means that we keep in touch with our graduates and they let us know.
How they're faring I would venture a guess that at this point it's probably even a little bit higher we do have a cutoff a national cutoff date that we, we, we meet and sometimes you know, there's there's last couple straggling offers coming in, so I'd even venture. A guess that it's using probably closer to 96, maybe even 97% suffice to say is very impressive and that goes into a lot of what you do within career services, which we will get into later in the presentation.
As well.
So that all is great with among our students. I won't I won't go into too much detail. I think the highlights here can speak for themselves themselves in the infographic, but I would probably point out is that we do pull from most states around the United States and 5 continents are represented. So our student population is diverse and that you're going to see students from different countries.
Students of different uhm colors students who are coming from all different types of socioeconomic class an urban as well as rural areas and then there met with our faculty who are just as diverse and um coming from all different parts of the world and they are, we go into a little bit more detail with our faculty as well. In the latter slide, but I will just say that they're just an impressive of world.
Renowned leaders in education and if you haven't already explored our website. I would encourage you to do so in a faculty section or in the research section that is a great way to learn more about the heart and soul of our campuses. Just looking more at the faculty that we attract here at Vanderbilt.
Um statistical it's a little bit more about our disciplinary breath. I know I kind of overview that in the very first slide. But in the next slide actually goes into this by Department. Many the word cloud that you see here. I think kind of accentuates? What we're all about here at Vanderbilt. We have a very interdisciplinary approach that really kind of combines.
A lot of these different areas of study and disciplines and Brian if you help me advance to the next slide. It actually gives you the comprehensive overview by Department loops little formatting issue, there, but Suffice, it to say is that we do have 5 Department Department of human and organizational development where you would find community development action. Human development counseling, which offers 2 separate tracks in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling.
There's also a PhD in CRA community research and action are Department of leadership policy in organizations also has a wide breadth of programs that we offer the ones that are in purple RREDD programs that are higher. Ed leadership Impala see an RK through 12 leadership and policy and then the leadership in learning and on line in organizations is our online option for a TD. We also have the MPP, which is the Master of public policy, specifically in education policy and I think what I would point out here.
There is I believe we want.
If not the only one one of very, very few programs in the country that offers an education policy and PP degree. There are many MPP programs, but very few that are specific to education policy. Higher Ed Administration Independent School Leadership International Education Policy Management and leadership and organizational performance round out the Masters in education that are offered and then in our Department of psychology. We have child studies again 2 tracks here we haven't applied track.
And as well as a clinical track and the quantitative methods program. Both programs are 2 years in length. Both confirming the Masters of Education and the PhD option. There is in psychological studies special education, which main many might know if you are interested in is ranked number one in the world right now and we talked a little bit about rankings in a future slide. But at this point that out, as I'm going through and then Department of teaching and learning as I mentioned at the Top everything from.
Elementary secondary English language learners learning design, gaining a lot of popular attraction also is our learning diversity in Urban Studies program and I would just encourage anyone who is listening to investigate any of these areas that might be of interest to you, I get a lot of calls about. Hey, I'm interested in XYZ program and after talking to them. They actually end up not only being a good candidate for that particular program.
But they actually may end up being better suited for one of these other programs. So I know it's very tedious to go through each one of these programs, but I do think there is a lot of value in discovery of of what each one of these discover offer even within some of these programs. There are areas of specialization or tracks that could you could further investigate that that may be of interest to you?

Hello Reena! On average, how many students attend the Human Development Counseling M.Ed. program?
OK so Tyler won't you tell us a little bit about your experience as a student as it pertains to the vision outlined in the Peabody Vision. Yeah, absolutely redivision, just right off the slide. Obviously, this, I'd say that states that Peabody. Some place that creates leaders for the nation and the world through conducting world class research translating that into practice and which then influences policy with the goal of tackling large societal issues enhance the opportunity and increase diversity for the global society.
I would say that my personal experience in the leadership and organizational performance program has done just that.
The goal is to develop leaders who engage locally regionally nationally and globally and there's many avenues through which you can actually get hands-on experience doing that through Peabody. Some of those would be through activities and events related directly to Peabody, which could be the governor's Academy Independent School Leadership Academy Academy or through faculty participation professional development programs also locally and regionally. We have the Metro. Nashville public school system with often provides a lot of internships in hands on experience for a lot of our.

Hi Gerado, This year's incoming class was 54 - about 1/2 in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and other in school counseling.
Med students there's the Susan Gray School, which is located here on campus and then there's the Tennessee Education Research Alliance and then nationally even engaged through the Irish center and family homelessness and globally. There's the Humphreys Fellows, which kind of source. Fellows from all over the world to come study here at Vanderbilt. I know personally my experience I was able to get an internship through Tennessee. Leaders of tomorrow program, which is a local program here through the Tennessee State government that was placed with a state agency where I was able to.
Develop hands-on leadership skills at that level and basically.
To sum it all up there's a lot of opportunity. That's provided for you here on campus. But there's also a lot of opportunity to develop these skills outside of campus through organizations that are sourced regionally and locally here in Nashville.
Travis Henschen
05:43:40 PM
Aside from the Independent School Leadership program, are there any other hybrid programs that allow students that don't live in Nashville to keep their jobs and still complete the program online and in-person in the summer?
Yeah, I would add to that, um, particularly as it pertains to the last bullet. We are a campus that is home to our Humphrey Fellows. Did you mentioned that I think that adds another layer of opportunity to interact with student student practitioners. Coming from all different types of Education Systems, which is there's a lot of learning to be had there an we also offer services to partners like for example, in Abu Dhabi.
The students don't feel that directly, but there is you know impact that spelled I would also include China in that as well are another faculty member. We focus on in a little bit. It is essentially a liaison for us in some of the most prestigious institutions in China.

So moving on to the next I would I would sort of just emphasize again that are connected tissue in many different areas, the stuff that binds us together as a college is one that's very interdisciplinary. The whole University actually is very interdisciplinary, an that's felt through number of different ways, not just in the classrooms, but also through research also through lectures on campus that there is a Deans diversity lecture series, there's a chancellor.
Lecture series uhm there are numerous publications an other types of ways that we put word out to students about how to engage with a lot of the connective tissue activities that actually occur on campus start to put into words because there's so much going on here. It's hard to keep track of it all, there's so much going on at one time? Yeah.

05:45:45 PM
How should one apply for the LPO PhD concentration in Higher Ed leadership and policy?
Yeah, so the more next slide kind of speaks, a little bit more to OK. I know I'm going to come to school here and get a great academic of experience. But what about the rest. What about me as a holistic person well. The Peabody offices of professional and graduate education or as we affectionately refer to him as pop GE, which is comprised of 3 offices that support you in every aspect of your view as a whole person.
So the office of student engagement, they do a ton of programming to help support you in many different ways, culturally intellectually and physically emotionally. Spiritually community building. All those things that you see on the compass. They're really doing a major service to our students as a fun activity last week. They did their false signature event was trivia trivia night which also they combined with.
Arkadijs Zvaigzne
05:46:35 PM
Under "program" it only specifies Higher Education Leadership and Policy EdD. Is that the same thing?
Dressing up in costumes. I was there, you were there, it was great wasn't my head that way. Over 200 students. That attended there was an yeah, there was a surprising amount of people, yeah, and it was, it was a great evening. Yahoo there was drinks and basically you create teams and compete against one another and I mean, there was a spontaneous random dance party that happened right in the middle of the night. It was fun, yeah, and there's also other things we have the Iris Book Club, which is a more scholarly activity, but their students really wanted an outlet to be able to publish their work.
And so that is a student organization that was holy founded and developed by students. There's a black coalition student group. There's Jewish Student Association. I could go on, but the people who run the office of student engagement truly are student advocates. They truly want the best for students and for them to be supported in every way possible, the office of equity diversity and inclusion is run by Sinamoi.

Hi Reena, Are there any common personal qualities (outside of academic or professional experience) that Vanderbilt looks for in its MEd applicants?
And she is she she joined a about a year ago and um has included a lot of different types of programming for students don't support them in their journey as well as we have students coming from different countries or from under represented minorities. We discuss things like impostor syndrome and you know what it what's it like to be a student of color here, there are many different outlets that she provides there her programming and through her office.
Uh to support students in that way as well, and um period. Peabody career services office. We have a whole separate slide for them. That will turn to now talking about their approach. It's very one on one students when they come to campus. Oh wait Tyler. This is about you and your experience when I talk to about your experience with Kirk Services. Yes, we kind of talked about that 95% placement rate.
Right at the very beginning and I have to sit here and say that that would not be possible without Jeff Henley and Kathleen roll, who are the the director Peabody Service career services and the associate director of the biker services and they work tirelessly Dan night to basically assist those who were in Graduate School here at Peabody to find not only internships, but also full time positions once you get out of.
Reena Lichtenfeld
05:49:02 PM
Travis - the ED in higher ed leadership & Policy OR k12 leadership and policy is executive formate too.
Once you get out of school. They are awesome, you will meet with them right away as soon as you get here and then you will continually meet with them as you progress through your course of study and.
I would say that better, but really prides itself on its alumni network and through Jeff. An Kathleen they will be able to.
Basically connect you with those individuals who have graduated already in our working in fields that you are interested in and through that alumni network. You will be able to find a job that you really enjoy are looking forward to starting so I would say that.
Reena Lichtenfeld
05:49:35 PM
Arkadjs - we'll be going through the application process momentarily
When you get here it is it would be who've you to establish a great relationship with Jeff and Kathleen and really keep in contact with them because what they can do for you is astounding.

05:50:02 PM
Hi Reena! In the Clinical Mental Health Counseling, do students become licensed upon graduation? What exactly is the degree a student would receive after going through that program?
Thank you Ann actually I think that there's a question in the chat trying to keep up with the chat and keep track of this so if I don't get to your question until the end forgive me, but and I know that we have lots of folks on the call, which is awesome, but I also want to make sure keeping pace here. But I think your response kind of ties in a little bit to Caroline's question about other common personality or personal qualities outside of academic or professional experience at Vanderbilt looks and MD applicants. I I think that that is really well.
Switch back to this slide back in a second, but I feel like that ties to the curve services question a bit because everybody is different and so there's not one specific you know quality that we're looking for everybody's coming from different academic backgrounds different levels of experience and experience period. Everybody's got their own personality. I think what we aim to do is we aim to take who you are.
And be able to present it outwardly for 2 employers. We prepare you in many different ways. And as far as the application process goes. I think the expectation is we are aiming for diversity on all different levels. I mean for diversity in terms of crafting classes that are going to contribute to classroom in a unique way so I think the answer is no. I don't think there's anything common that we're looking for. I think we look for people who are going to be collegial.
Maybe that's the common you know, Kelly Julann kind to one another. Uh an supportive of one another. I don't know that I could pinpoint anything. Besides those very general characteristics. Yeah, I would say the most in my experience. The most common trait. Amongst people that go to school here is that everybody is excited to be here and this is where people want to be through for one reason or another life is probably to Vanderbilt University and now we're all here taking advantage of what?
Vanderbilt has for offering scriptures yeah.
Caroline Wheeler
05:52:01 PM
Thank you!
I'm on the next 2 slides, we have tried to highlight some we have 184 faculty. So we tried to sort of take the selection of the one from each Department, which is like kind of impossible to do, but I think that the selection. We have here is representative of all the things that we talked about in the vision for Peabody. It's representative of that interdisciplinary approach that we spoke about an.
Dasha Peppard
05:52:27 PM
Does the application to the Masters of Higher Education Administration include an interview?
I would encourage you uh depending on the Department that you're looking at to explore further any of the works from doctor James Booth, who's interested in brings a lot of different aspects of neuroscience into our.
Research here interna psychology doctor, Maury Nation, he's been looking at bullying and has done some great work in terms of the research. Even very much locally, but also nationally on the next slide. We have Doctor Rich Milner, who not only is a phenomenal faculty member to have here on staff. But he's also the editor in chief of urban education. He is looked to as one of the experts in oftentimes is asked to speak.
Kate Sidarovich
05:53:20 PM
Does career service help international students as well?
Haley Kvarnberg
05:53:34 PM
Are graduate students in Clinical Mental Health Counseling allowed and/or encouraged to participate in research?
Now on a national level about Urban Education Doctor Show Craven choose. The One I was referring to is sort of our internal representative working with many of the procedures institutions in China and a lot of other academic partnerships that we have with them. I believe we just establish a relationship with Beijing normal.
And a doctor doctor Lynn Fuchs Fuchs have a bit of a reputation here on campus and that's a good reputation. They support many, many students dozens of students every year on research assessments, and research assistantships and they actually are called Fuchs Fellows, so again just a very small handful of faculty that you can go back and look at but I encourage you to do.
Bernarda Tarré
05:54:25 PM
Hi! My server is not working as I'd hoped, and I'm only able to see the text responses to questions. Would you mind answering my question here?
A little bit more research on somebody amazing faculty that we have here next slide talks more about our research centers. I don't know that this is necessarily an exhaustive list. It's actually screenshot from one of our pages on the website. I think when I wanted to elevate here was the fact that our faculty work really hard to attract grant money to support the research and to support further.
Bernarda Tarré
05:54:56 PM
I'd like to know how should international students approach letters of recommendations when these cannot be written in English?
Exploration it's different disciplines and across disciplines last year of college attracted not unit not Vanderbilt University as a whole, but Peabody professional and graduate programs attracted about over 40 million dollars of research grant money, which is just unheard of and it's pretty impressive.
It said in this year. I think so. Far Special Education Department has attracted a I think they just got awarded a 17 million dollar. Grant just this year and that alone is just huge but I would point out things like Tennessee Education Research Alliance or Tera. That's actually run by one of our faculty members in the LPO Department leadership policy and Organization Department. I know we use a lot of Akron, Irish center if you Google.
Are put into your web address iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu you'll see a whole plethora of resources available for teachers. There are the work that they're doing. the Kennedy center supporting student. I don't even think is on here, Kennedy Center supports special education and research in that area. There is a ton of opportunities if you are looking for it. You can research the anyone of those further. I'm looking at the time and I don't. I see lots of questions coming in so many go through.
The next slide fairly quickly and just say we have awesome students. We have really, really awesome students. Tyler you being one of them. Of course, but I would point out is the link at the bottom of the page here and of course, you can write read about any one of these fabulous students. Kari Boston game is not only pictured here. But he's also at the airport. You see him. There were just very proud of him yet to find a national airport. You'll see a big old post Rd.
Yeah, so I would I would look more at our recent alumni success stories. I'll give you a more of an idea, I think that the the.
Haeju Cheon
05:56:56 PM
Thank you for your explanations. Does GRE score is more important than the CV?
The story I want to drive home here is our students are getting placed around the world. In many different areas of Education and business and nonprofit organizations. They're starting their own companies. It's just a wide breadth of opportunities, where students end up going.
Julianne DeFilippis
05:57:19 PM
Could you please speak more to the community development and action track? It sounds a lot like a macro social work program, so I’d like to know more about how it’s structured as an MEd? Thanks!
Justin Martin
05:57:27 PM
Hi Reena! The overall seriousness and rigor and love radiated by Peabody folks is incredible and has super-sold me, but I'm worried about cost. What resources are available for middle-class and low-income students, and what should I be doing now to best prepare?
Uhm the next slide talks more about our ranking reputation. I'm sure if you've been investigating Peabody. You know about all this. I just didn't want to gloss over too much that we do have where we are recognized on a national level. I think it's for good reason. It's for our stellar students are outstanding faculty. The research that we're doing, and the at the end of the day. It's what we're bringing back to the discipline in education and human development. Now let's get to the meat and your questions. Let me talk to you.
A little bit more about the application process. So if you're applying for what we call professional programs, which includes are Masters of Education Masters of public policy or are Doctor of Education. EDD that deadline to apply is going to be on a future slide. But it's December 31st if you're looking to apply for 2020 or probably working on your application now. The application is free. It's on line. We need 2 to 3 letters of recommendation the GR.
It's required some programs will accept the MIT but not also, if you're in question. Ask we do need your transcripts of of institutions. You attended and the statement of purpose your statement of purpose. I'll talk about a little bit. We are looking to get to know you a little bit more. We want to know why you're interested in pursuing the degree program. We've chosen why you've chosen Peabody to as a place for you to work on your degree.
And what you plan on doing with your degree after you graduate. It's pretty simple. If you hit those 3. Notes in your statement of purpose. You know you can do it through telling us a story but not in a long elaborate story. But you know just tell us a little bit more about you will be able to see your capability of writing will be able to hopefully see a little bit of your personality through your statement purpose, although it should be a professional collegial statement.
One more thing about just on this slide transcripts only have to be unofficial that for the application process. Yeah, so once you're accepted then you would submit your official transcripts. So just to remember your HD electronic form. Thank you and lots of institutions now have also moved to electronic transcript. So it's open up to your process has been in the past, although there is a fee involved so you might want to save on the fee. Yeah, that's a good point now. Everybody also wants to know about is financing your education so.
How can I afford to go to Vanderbilt uhm so if you apply by the deadline we are going to review not only for admission, but also for merit based scholarships are American scholarships range anywhere from 35% off of tuition up to 75% off of tuition your cost of attendance. Of course includes more than just tuition. So you have to keep those things in mind, and because of that we encourage students to.
Look for graduate assistantships, we do offer a wide variety of graduate assistantships. The good news is you can you can look across all of Vanderbilt foreign assistantship the Dean of students office actually is quite a number of assistantships Belmont University, which is across the way from us also offers a limited number of assistantships for Peterbilt student specifically and there's research assistantships and teaching assistantships and the reason why we encourage you to do that is not only does it help you?

Sending...
Advance and get more experience, but it also helps you in terms of getting discounts on tuition. Sometimes more than what you get awarded and also you get to earn a stipend so you get to put some money in your pocket. I would also mention that loans are scary on the surface, but very much a reality for many, many students to help with the cost of living which includes your housing or transportation your food.
Uh if you ever like to go out and then national many people do like to go out. So I would not discount applying for loans. If you are going to go for alone. You can start your application now and I would encourage you to do that because if we are able to package you early you'll get a much better sense of what your out of pocket your obligations are going to look like so that free free application for federal student aid or?
Casa is something I would encourage students to do and then on our website. We also have a nice PDF that outlines some external scholarships. They have different deadlines and it is not an exhaustive list. You can also go to scholarships tick com. But those are sort of the typical ways of subsidizing your cost of attendance. Some tips to remember make sure you apply by the deadline.

Good evening from Italy! Thanks for having me. Simple question, but what separates the good applications from the great ones? And is there interview during the application process?
Mario Jackson
06:02:26 PM
I am interested in applying for the PhD in Policy and Leadership at the institution. Does this program come with full funding and stipend?
If you apply after you submit the completed application. After that deadline. We will continue to review for admission an for financial words. But it may be on a more limited basis, which is why I'm saying apply by the deadline again apply for federal aid simultaneously and research on your external scholarships and fellowships. So I think that brings us to the end and I see the chat blowing up which I love so I'm instead of trying to type in chat, which is going to take me a lot longer.
I think where we were up to excite answer Caroline's question live so Ronald you are asking How is the national job placement so we may have? We may have covered that we had about 95% placement now the career services office literally just published their most up-to-date.

06:03:42 PM
And sorry I came in late. Will the slides and audio be available on the website later?
Uh what do you call it their annual reports in that report is typically available on our website in the career services section if I get a chance or if one of you guys could search for it put the link in the chat what it does is it shows you like OK 49% of the students stayed in Nashville and the rest are around the globe or you know X percent or in the United States. So it's a very comprehensive report.
Kelsey Ricks
06:03:44 PM
Hi there! Because of the one year expedited nature of the Elementary Education program, does the schedule allow students in the program to hold graduate assistantships?
Hopefully, that answers your question Mama, but if it doesn't feel free to put something else in the chat. Michelle you're in the clinical in the clinical mental health counseling to students become licensed upon graduation and what exactly is the degree of student would need to receive most exactly OK, so first of all the degree is a Masters of Education for clinical mental health counseling. It prepares you for licensing but you don't automatically get it. I believe that there is a process that you have to go through to get the license but essentially going through our program.
Kate Sidarovich
06:04:25 PM
What is the admission rate for MS of International Education policy and Management?
Prepares you for it, but I believe that that's a licensing is an external license, not like you get a license from Vanderbilt University at the national level license, so we prepared for that.

Um Dasha Dasha, I'm sorry if I'm saying Your name wrong does the math does the application to the Masters privatization administrator shooting includes an interview there is not an interview required for that program, although the program director is happy to meet with folks if they would like to. In fact goes for anybody on this call. We do have a campus visit scheduler online an program directors are very accessible and they were happy to meet with folks either.

By having a person or if you just reach out to them that all of their email addresses are on our website and I'm sure they'll be happy to meet with you, but I would say that there is an interview required for 2 of our programs. One is the human development counseling program. It's part of the accreditation. It's part of requirements and the child studies program as well, and sometimes the special education program.

Where can we find recent topics thesis of current students of the university?
Um dustproof services help international students as well. Yes, I mean that's just they have all of the students. They will do as much as possible to depending on what your ultimate goal is whether it's to stay in the United States, which as you all may probably will be aware. It's more difficult to do that. These days, but or if they will help you if that's your end goal or friend goals to go back into your punch your home country and.
We have a vast resource network of alumni and they're all over the world. That's a That's a primary way that that our career services office help students but they will also go above and beyond, to help you connect into different organizations in education outlets as well. Haley are graduate students have clinical mental health counseling allowed or encouraged to participate in research absolutely yes.

06:06:26 PM
Does the super score of the TOEFL/GRE test is accepted?
Uhm I wish I could give you like concrete examples on this call. I don't have any right now, but I will say that absolutely ask because mental health counseling.
A program is 3 years and we me search Skype accounts for that 30 upstate.

06:06:56 PM
What is the admissions rate for the Special Education M. Ed. program? What are the average GRE scores for that program?
I'm Bernardo Uhm I see you're having some technical issues would like to know how students approach students approach letters of recommendation when these cannot be written in English, so for that for letters of recommendation when they can't be written in English, which we understand is you would want to use a?
A certified translator.
To get it, you would have the recommender write it in their native language in their native tongue and then have it officially translated.
Reena Lichtenfeld
06:07:47 PM
For letters of recommendations - you'd want to use a certified translator

When and where will the human development counseling MEd's interview be conducted if we are invited?
Sorry. They requested to type it out, I couldn't talk and type at the same time uhm.
OK, where am I guys.
OK, this Jerry score uhm is it more important than CV, it's just as important as deceiving your we do have a holistic approach to the review for admission and the jury is as important as well as your transcript to give us the academic profile and you know how we how we think you might do based on your previous experience and how you're doing on standardized tests.

Thank you!
But we're also interested in especially depending on the program. You're interested in. We are also very interested to see other aspects of your candidacy and that's told through your background your statement of purpose and without your recommenders. We didn't really talk, too much about recommenders, but definitely give you recommenders a heads up that you're applying definitely give them a heads up on what you want them to accentuate in in their letter of support to you in.
And that's going to be an important aspect as well.
Justin um the seriousness and rigor.
Love radio by Peabody folks is incredible thanks and Super sold me worried about costs OK. I think maybe we just went through all of that. Uhm you might have typed that out, right when I was going through the financial financial part, but you have further concerns definitely reach out to me, but one thing went well, let me address that a little bit further. I hear from a lot of students. The concern about taking out a loan. They don't take awhile but took out loans undergraduate.
Uh.
Kelsey Ricks
06:09:39 PM
I have been out of undergrad for a few years now. For recommendations - do they all need to be from academic sources, or are other recommendations from professional experiences acceptable?

Hi-Thank you for accepting and answering questions! I am applying for the Masters of Special Education with the concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis. I heard that Lipscomb has a program of tuition relief for students who are already Registered Behavior Technicians. Does Vanderbilt have a similar program? Thanks again!

What is the cost per credit hour?

06:10:08 PM
Hi, is the program of international education and policy management popular for applicants?
Rest assured, that many students are having to take out loans. I'm certainly not telling anyone that they have to take out a loan. It just becomes a reality for many students, particularly for those like me and I'm raising my hand who can't afford it fleshed out of their pocket. I think many of us fall into that. I think it's important to understand about loans is that there are it's a federal loan, which means our federal programs to help you pay, it back so there's things like.
Hum.
Um pays you earn there are also loan forgiveness programs for example, if you make a consistent amount of payments back after I think it's actually 120 payments. They will forgive the rest of the loan that comes after that there so there's just just don't be too afraid of that, if that becomes a reality. We're going to be working on a little video presentation on that with our friends in the office of federal financial federal student aid.
Because this has become uhm a topic of conversation and I don't want folks. I want folks to know the realities of taking out loans and not be too afraid of them if that's a reality that they have to endure.
Leila Shearer
06:11:24 PM
Do prospective students apply for an assistantship before or after admission acceptance? Specifically, a placement for field experiences in the Applied Behavior Analysis concentration in the Special Education MEd program
Kate Sidarovich
06:11:27 PM
Should the students come with the specific idea of the research or it can be specified during the studies?
But by the way for international students who may be on the call. There are some through the Vanderbilt Federal Credit Union. Some international students may be able to to be considered for alone. A private loan not federal loan. 'cause obviously you have to be a United States to distance for that. But they will consider international students through the Vanderbilt University Federal Student Credit Union.
Um Ronald the first round of admissions decisions are made it by the beginning of February would be notified for Masters or professionals students EDMED or MPP.
Oh, Justin I'm not sure which sites maybe with scholarships.com and also on our Peabody website can somebody. Tyler can you put in the link for the external scholarships 'cause that might also help the other person who is asking a question and maybe it was also just in an Oh Ciao from Italy. Thank you for being here. Simple questions separates good applications from the great ones, and is there, I think we already addressed the interview.
Uhm I think good applications are people who are you know.
Kind of checking the boxes if you will that got everything in. They've heard my points on um.
You know what makes for a good application, but I think the great ones. They go a little a step further in terms of really kind of letting us know where they are, and what they want to do so for example, I was saying in the statement of purpose.
Jia Cao
06:13:05 PM

Tyler Likins
06:13:08 PM
This is the website for Financial Aid related inquiries - https://peabody.vanderbilt.edu/degrees-programs/masters-edd-tuition-financial-aid/
And at um why Peabody Well, you could tell me why Peabody and like you know sort of Google, a couple things and put it into the website into your statement of purpose. But if there's particular research that you have found that your resonating with and there's a faculty member that you would want to site that tells us that you are a little bit more serious than the average doubt tells us for weaving that into your story.
Uh that gives us a little bit more sense of yeah, you're not doing a cut and paste in several different applications. You're really showing us that this is a place that you really want to be based on your research. That's just one example. I think you know if you have Jerry score of that is sort of like on the borderline and you retook it and you scored a little bit better that shows us that you have you really want your purse?
Your perseverance and you are hungry to come that's not to say that you have to take it again. But I am kind of literally answering the question the good from the great, so help. That helps a little bit by no means do you have to take the test again if you feel like you've got a score score that would be competitive?
Joe Behrendt
06:14:12 PM
Thank you!
Bernarda Tarré
06:14:17 PM
Would you recommend reaching out to faculty before mentioning them and their research in the statement of purpose?
Um let's see where am I now, um getting here. I'm interested in applying for PhD in policy, and leadership at the institution just program. Tacoma full funding OK my ring out. Thank you for asking a question. I didn't talk too much about our graduate programs or PhD programs that the deadline for application for PhD is December, 1st and that is a hard deadline where applications are not reviewed after that deadline. But all PhD students who are admitted to our programs, they do get full funding.
For the month of the program that they're here and those typically come with research assistantships. At that pay stipend a modest stipend. You're not going to walk out of here rich as Rockefeller, but it is enough to sustain the program.
Um do I have to submit all the materials for test scores before the deadline. Can I submit more updated scores after the priority deadline, so that's a good question so you want to complete you want. A complete application submitted for the for the December 31st deadline. That's going to go to faculty members for the review, so if you even if you would submit something a test for after that date. It will be added to your file whether or not. It's going to be reviewed by the faculty.
In the right sort of time frame.
Michelle Garramone
06:15:45 PM
Do you also accept the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) for submission for Human Development Counseling program?
It just depends I mean, it really depends on when they're actually reviewing the application. So I would say try to get everything in that you possibly can before that December 31st deadline. If it's not if it's after that. It's OK. I just can't guarantee that it's going to be in that first round review.
Um the importance of the GRE and the average score so average score for most programs professional programs about 310. Three 15 the jury is a predictor of your first year of graduate studies or professional studies. That's been proven analytically by the data. It's not the end all, be all but is for some programs a little bit more important than other programs, but I would say it.
Is an important part of your that holistic review process? This is entirely correct me if I'm wrong but this is pretty rigorous program. Yeah, absolutely, yeah, when I say program. I mean, all the programs is pretty rigorous. So we want to make sure that we set you up those dollars at Justin. We were talking about before we don't want to just take your money. We want to be successful and part of that is just making sure that you have the academic profile to do that part of that profile is your GRE score.
In combination with all the other things that we've talked about as far as your application goes so I don't want to downplay the importance of the jury. But I don't want to overemphasize it. Either 310, which is an average, which means we have students with less than 310 and more than a 3 tab. Yeah, I tell people typically that the GRE is obviously necessary and it obviously it. Obviously serves a purpose, but going into taking the Jerry. You don't want to be stressing about it like this is going to be the thing that make a route.
Makes or breaks your application you want to go and you're taking your Jerry confident you want to go into your GRE basically prepared and if you're stressed and if if you're over emphasizing the GRE it's something that could negatively affect your score so remember that it is a holistic process remember that there are other aspects of your education or of your sorry of your application that are going to be reviewed and just remember.
Ben Sarbah
06:18:24 PM
Is it possible to get a PhD in Educational Leadership & Policy with my background (M.Ed,MBA Finance,Pg Dip Management,HND Accountancy. And do I need a GRE before I can apply?
That the GRE is not something that will absolutely destroy your your application if it's not necessarily where you would like it to be yeah, Jacob you're asking how large is the MPP program. I believe we have about 20. I don't remember the exact number, but it's in the mid 20s. I want to say about 23 students that are just incoming and then of course, there second year student so total between the 1st and 2nd years is about.
Jenna Dufficy
06:18:37 PM
Hi Reena! What housing assistance does Vanderbilt offer the Independent School Leadership students who live out-of-state and are only in Nashville for the summer programs?
4040 plus students uhm and it is a It is a good mix of like people who college straight throughs and career advance yrs in that particular program. I do think it is a good mix of both students types of students and the average age for Peabody students about 27.
Um GI yes, our goal is to make the slides and audio available at a later time yes.
Um Kelsey Hi there, because uh the one your expedited nature of elementary education program does discovery law students in program hold graduate assistantships.
That's a great question, Um desk at OPS. I think you would want to.
Consult with the program director Brian Cesselon sort of what the opportunities are that you might be able to do I know that for example, some students who have research assistantships. They're able to do their work at sort of off hours if you will so it really just depends I wouldn't say that every assistantship opportunity open to you. I think that would be alive. That would be unrealistic. But I think there are some yes.
Um.
What are the admission rates for the Ms international education policy management? I don't actually know off Top my head but if you are presenting a strong application application. That's admissible in your applying by the deadline. I think you would probably have a pretty good chance of getting admitted so I would encourage you to to apply. I'm sorry. I don't know that off the Top my head. Thank you Tyler for providing that information.
How many students are accepted again I don't know if I have like that kind of data at my fingertips. I'm really sorry. I don't. But again, I would say the same thing. If you're presenting a compelling application by the December 31st deadline chances. Are you're probably going to be get admitted if there are concerns about your application. But you're 10. Chaly good candidate. The program director may reach out to you directly or you may want to reach out directly as well.
Like I said, before our faculty are really are very approachable.
Uhm yes, we superstore super score on jury and to pull the admission rate Oh. Gosh, she goes or ask me admission rates. I just don't have that data off the Top of my head, but in the same, the same applies apply the deadline would it be if even if our if I made up something right now are are are admission rate is 40%. I wouldn't want anybody to be discouraged or dissuaded if that's the case. I would just say.
Present your application.
Snap, location fee is free you got nothing to lose, um submit by December 31st and see what happens.
Um as far as Jerry I believe that I've addressed that are 8 three 10 is the average for most of our programs three 10315.
Uhm yes, we will have a presentation available later. When and where were the human development counseling's interview so the human telling counseling program. Does all of their interviews via Skype and you would be invited you would have that invitation when they begin reviewing applications.
Which may be as early as mid December and certainly through the spring semester?
Katy Penney
06:22:25 PM
Do you recommend a GRE test prep book or class over another?
If you apply by the December 31st deadline. I try to squeeze in all the interviews within the first couple of weeks of January. So I wouldn't be surprised if you do complete your application. By then if you didn't get an invitation if you're competitive for that time frame.
Parker Turner
06:22:38 PM
If I took the GRE in 2017, would you recommend retaking the test to submit a more recent score?
Jesse are candidates accepted into their program before they chose choose their desired track specifically for early childhood. Special education and generally yes. You don't have to but it certainly helps a lot because what happens is for that particular program. And for many of the others that have track options your program your application is actually a review by faculty in that area.
And I'm speaking specifically if to the early childhood. Special Ed Program. So it would be helpful. If you could indicate that in your area of interest on the application.
Ali Clifton
06:23:31 PM
Is it possible to add an ELL track to the secondary education MeD program?
Umbridge, it, but how many students are accepted into child studies program. All these great questions. I'm not sure the answer too. I hope I addressed your question just a second ago but I just encourage ING you to apply by the deadline Kelsey Banatica. Underground for a few years for recommendations. They all need to be from academic sources. So we encourage you to try to have your letters of recommendation by one professional and one by one academic if you can't. If you can only do one or the other.
Reena Lichtenfeld
06:23:47 PM
@Katsiaryna Sidarovich We will make the presentation available after this concludes.
That's OK as long as they speak to um if you if you say example if you have 2 professional like meaning you know one of your supervisors at work? Maybe they can speak to skills that are more on the academic front like ability to learn.
Tyler Likins
06:24:12 PM
For any questions that do not get answered tonight feel free to email me at peabody.ambassadores@vanderbilt.edu. My colleagues and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as we can.
Ability to utilize a critical thinking and analytical skills. Those kinds of things or vice versa. If you're coming straight from undergrad and you don't have any professional experience. If you can select people who can speak to your ability. Get your work ethic and your your your ability to work in groups. Those kinds of things. If you think about it from that perspective, ideally it would be 1 professional and academic.
Dasha Peppard
06:24:34 PM
Does what was said about the rec letters apply to the master of higher ed?
ABBA GAIL Uhm, absolutely happy to answer questions. I hope I'm hitting most of these. I know that someone not applying for Master Special. Educational concentration applied behavior analysis. I heard that Lipscomb has a program tuition relief for students who are already registered but here it is.
Uh I I'm I don't believe so I don't believe we have a program like that do you know that there is a federal program it's called teach Grant and teach grant can offer $5000 for people who go into low income areas for teaching. Afterwards, I would I would encourage you to look at teach grant just just Google Teach Grant and see what the details are there where we don't have?
That much information or website about it because it's sort of of administered by the Department of Education and we don't have any control over how that gets administered but our office of student financial aid can provide more information about teach grants, which kind of is the same thing in a bit to some extent, but current cost per credit hour is 1938 dollars.
Per credit hour.
The program is the program for international education policy management popular for applicants.
Uhm yes, it is uhm in fact, we have a small cohort that came in this, this year. I think we have 13 new students and there is a particular student that is, of interest in that programme who he and his wife, who is also here has an organization called to move mountains. I believe it's called and it's very interesting. They just so I guess my point is that the international policy in education management program attracts.
Some of the most fascinating people that are really interested in helping the globe promote education around the Globe and to really rise up some lower more disadvantage countries first world countries and everything in between. You know it is really a fascinating program. I encourage you to, if you're interested in it to explore it's more.
Uh do student perspective students apply for assistantship before or after the admissions process. Specifically, a placement for field experiences in applied behavioral analysis concentration of special education and needy program well. I want to. I want to touch on 2 things with so I know we're kind of running out of time and I have more questions to answer and I'll stay on on to answer questions as needed. But one thing. I want to say is there is another option to get the applied behavior analysis and that's good child studies program.
So if you're already a certified teacher and you just want to do the ABA you can always do that for the child studies program as well. So I just want to make sure it's out there 'cause That's not widely known or really kind of We're working on making that more.
Kate Sidarovich
06:28:00 PM
Where can we find recent topics thesis of current students of the university?
Prominent on the website assistantship well. Here's the here's. The thing about assistantship. We have a lot of assistantships available for students because as I mentioned before Vanderbilt University and Belmont in a couple of other local organizations have assistantships available for students. The challenge that we have is that it's not.
Jocelyn Ng
06:28:10 PM
Are the interviews for the Child Studies program also conducted via skype?
Haeju Cheon
06:28:12 PM
May I receive the two recommendation letters from the researchers independently in the same research project where I participate in? Is it better to take three letters from the all different institutions?
It's not centrally administered so these opportunities kind of come up, um as grants get get awarded as budgets get approved as you know students graduate so we put these opportunities up are not predominantly on the Peabody Job Board, which you would get access to as an admitted student if you're admitted for example, in February and you. See you get access to that job board and you see zero assistantships in there, it's because.
None of that has happened yet. Maybe grants haven't been approved yet or budgets have been approved. But you keep checking back on a regular basis to see what's available. Also, the programs themselves are really good about informing doke with their cohorts of students as to when opportunities become available also we have a welcome weekend for students in March this year. It's going to be March 27th and 2828 and many students come in.
I like to come in on the 26th when the Dean of students office.
Offers a graduate assistant, um interview day in that more information comes out about that through our admitted student Facebook page and are admitted to website so there's just lots of different ways. And then in the summer. That's when more of these assistantship opportunities become more prominent and available to our students. So I know that was a long winded answer, but I think the good news is that there's lots of them available. It's just a matter of the timing of them.
Sometimes seems to be disjointed from the time students need to know if they have an assistantship, which is a little bit frustrating for us, too, but we know that they're coming. We just need students to be patient with us in our processes should students come with specific idea of the research or can it be specified during site. Great questions one. I did a focus group recently with some of the child studies students and I think this could be said. For many of our programs. This was the quote. They said they want. They like the idea of sitting with uncertainty for awhile.
So no you don't have to have a specified area of research that you want to to study. I think the idea of having a electives in our in our areas, having the close proximity and relationship with the program directores and faculty. I think all lends itself to a an inquisitive area where you're able to sort of like figure it out while you're a student here, some students come in with a very specific.
Idea of what they want to do they want to get matched up with a faculty member. Sometimes that works sometimes it doesn't so I think there's a wide range, but you do not have to come in with a specific area of interest in that area can international students apply for graduate assistantships and works work on campus. Yes, they can. They're limited on how many hours they can work on campus. But yes and I believe that one of the things that they do.
We're in the office of International Student Scholarship Services, is they help students understand what opportunities and parameters. They have to work with in you have to get a Social Security number as an example. So you can get paid and they help you through that process.
Would you make Beckman reaching out faculty before mentioning them in their research and statement of purpose or not? That's a good question.
Uh I don't think you have to no uhm and I don't think that it should be overly gratuitous in the when you do mention them. I think it's probably good to just sort of say reference the research. Maybe the name that's associated with it and say why its tide. It wouldn't go into whole dissertation about why you know you're vested in this one particular faculty member so for that reason, I would say you don't have to.
To do that, it may appear overly gratuitous if you do that, but it certainly.
It's certainly up to you, we don't have any parameters or rules against that.
Uhm you also accept Millers analogy test. I don't believe for Human Development Council. That MATI think for most of the programs in the Department of teaching and learning they will take the M80 and maybe even in the Department of of leadership.
You should performance in organizations so Colosseum organization sorry, but not I don't believe for human development counseling.
Is it possible your PhD in educational leadership policy with the background an?
My background me D MB A?
Yes, it's possible Benjamin and, yes, you need the jirari, um Jerry is required for all applicants.
Hi Jenna, um housing good uh so um for the Independent School Leadership Program.
Um their housing uh the program director Patrick is really good about working with students and connecting them with other students so that the housing piece can be addressed. I think last year. Maybe the year before a lot of the students ended up getting like a big Airbnb sharing that for the length of time that they were here and the cost became very manageable even though it sounded like it was lot became very manageable when a shared across many students. I think that's just one.
Well, that's been used in the past, the ISL the independence will leadership students come here for 6 weeks during the summer, so it is a little bit of a challenge, but again, the program director in the alumni from the program are really super hands-on and helpful. It doesn't become a challenge just becomes you know something that you do is taken care of.
Katie do I recommend a GRE test prep book or class over another.
Tyler do you have any way that you I don't know that I necessarily dealing a little bit out of the loop with.
It's been awhile since I've prepared for the Jerry Myself.
OK so it's been awhile since I've prepared for the jury as well. When I submitted my GRE scores. They were 7 days away from expiring from the five year period. So it's been a long time I would I would say that when I when I talk to people who are currently preparing I would say that.
Um.
Most people go through any number of study guides that you can find it like Barnes and Nobles or any book store. A lot of people like to use Kaplan and other agencies. That's that's really something that is going to be your column what? What is going to actually work best for you, but I would certainly try and do something to prepare for the GR ES, especially if you've been out of school for a while because it is a standardized test and it does take you know.
There are certain you know tips and strategies that exist out there that that people say that have assisted them as they take it so for my personal experience I've really don't have much to offer because it was so long ago. But I would say that that's probably what I hear most when talking to people are currently currently I agree that I have some good experience with Kaplan and I think they do really good job with test prep.
Katy Penney
06:36:10 PM
Thank you!
Joseph you took the Jerry in 2017 uhm. I you do not have to take it again for more recent slower as Tyler just alluded to it has to be 5 years old or less, so that would be fine unless you're concerned about the score. Then you can retake it is it possible to add ELL track to secondary Ed Med program.
Yes, I believe so um and in that case, I would uhm.
You would want to reach out directly to the program director her name is Shannon. Shannon Daniel because I think it kind of of for secondary education. Yeah, for sure. They work together. All the time. Sorry I didn't see that you are a secondary. Ed Yes, Ali that is definitely possible dasha.
Kelsey Ricks
06:36:56 PM

06:37:21 PM
Thank you so much
Not really I know that I was saying that you can reference research. I think it just depends on on your particular area. I would say hi read that might not be necessary to do whereas in like something like um community development and action. You might or definitely any of the PhD programs. I would just say that you know what? Why do you want to come to Peabody? Why is this the place sometimes all it translates to research sometimes it rarely?
Back to you know, I have a great friend who attended here and was able to do assistantship in the Dean of students office and that really spoke to me. It depends on what it is that you want to do. Where can we find recent topics pieces of current students at the University?
Um.
There is a research there's a research tab on our peabody.vanderbilt.edu website don't know that it.
Uhm you would be able to think you can search in 3 different ways. You can three search by topic by faculty or by I think there's a third one. It's not escaping me now but that's where you would find any research don't know if its current students, but it maybe it's more than likely our current PhD students.
Um are the interviews for child size program conducted by Skype Yes. May I received 2 recommendations from the researchers independently in the same research project where I participate? Is it better to make 3 letters from different institutions.
Um.
Whatever makes the most sense in terms of who can speak to your capabilities as a potential student for Peabody. I don't know that I can.
Tristine Nguyen
06:39:06 PM
